Each of these items help with moving ahead.  The rear view mirror helps you to see where you have been and to make sure that it is safe to change lanes.  The side view mirror gives you another view.  You can make sure that you are free to continue on your trip.  the windshield allows you to see what is ahead.
Do you realize that life is a lot like this?  The windshield is more than twenty times the size of the rear view or side view mirror.  The reason is simple: the main goal is to move ahead.  The rear view mirror is to be glanced at periodically.  The same would be true of the side view mirror.
We must move ahead.  Take a moment to read the words of the Apostle Paul:
Phil 3:13-14
13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
NIV
Paul says to forget the past.  Yet many today try to drive their lives by focusing on the rear view mirror of life.  In other words they are stuck in the past.  They cannot let go, they cannot move on, they cannot let it go.  If you were to drive your vehicle by only concentrating on the rear view mirror, you would end up in a ditch or worse.  It will take more than just trying to forget the past, you must press on.  Have you ever noticed that printed on the side view mirror is the following statement: “objects are closer than they appear in the mirror.”  Many live their lives fixated on what is going to get them.  They are enslaved by the fear that something in the past is gaining on them and will overtake them.
Paul, in prison when the Spirit spoke to him, said that he was going to move on and move ahead and press on for the Lord.
The reason the windshield is so much larger is that it forces us to focus on the future.  Where is your focus today?  Give your past to the Lord, allow Him to cover it and forgive it, and move on with Him!
Keep the windshield view of life

Great analogy, Dr. Blake! There are times I wish that windshield were just a little bit clearer or bigger…:)
