Regardless of what happened yesterday, you and I get a new day today. If you are going through a hard place that may not sound like a good thing, but it really is incredibly good news. The writer of Lamentations gives us a wonderful inspired reminder:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

In these two verse are several important reminders:

  • God’s love is steadfast! Steady and ever present. His love will hold us safely.
  • God’s love never ceases! His love is never in doubt, always present and never runs out!
  • God’s mercies never come to an end! Most of things you and I are familiar with come to an end. We run out of time, resources, and patience just to name a few. Everything we encounter can be exhausted and depleted. There is one exception, the mercy of God. No matter the issue or situation, every day more mercy arrives.
  • Mercy comes new and fresh every morning. I do not have to rely upon His mercy from the previous day or week, there is fresh supply for today. Whatever today may hold, I can make it through by His grace and mercy.
  • Great is His faithfulness!

I do not know how I would have made it through this year without the faithfulness of God! To call the year 2020 unusual is a vast understatement. All of us have faced challenges that just a year ago we could not have imagined. Learning new ways of doing things as well as coping, and a sense of sadness over things that could not be completed in the usual ways. I think of weddings postponed, funerals held without people in person to express condolences, graduations done virtually and parties without people. Nearly everyone has a sense of loss over something that has happened during this difficult time. It seems appropriate to me that we take a deep breath and thank God for bringing us this far and remember He will continue to bring new mercy daily!

I know so many who are feeling the pressure of trying to operate in an environment filled with conflict, hostility, resentment, fear, sadness and a great sense of grief and loss. Here are a couple of quick reminders:

  • It is not your fault! You did not ask for this, but together we will work our way through
  • In spite of the loss, there have been gains. New methods and ways of doing things have been discovered to accomplish our work.
  • Take time for yourself and your family. Do not neglect the ones closest to you.
  • Remember you are doing better than you think you are, you really are!

There may not have been a Thanksgiving holiday in a very long time, for which a concerted effort should be made to offer praise and gratitude to God. The fact we have made it thus far, is a testament to His amazing grace. Today is a new day, look for and expect His mercy to visit you today.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
