Goal setting is more than just an interesting idea or subject. If we do not have goals we have no idea of what we are doing or if we are on target. Aiming at nothing may make one never lose or feel badly, nothing is ever accomplished as well. In football a field goal is not counted unless the ball passes through the uprights. Why set or be concerned about goals?

  • Goals give you a target.  What do you believe you should be doing or more importantly what do you believe God has put you on earth to accomplish? What are your goals? Once determined, your actions must be working in that direction.
  • Goals can help you concentrate your time and effort. One major time management challenge we  face today is there are more things available for us to do than anyone could possibly get done. There is more to do let alone accomplish, in an entire lifetime. When left to our own devices we wander aimlessly through our days, weeks, months and years. We need to have a plan so that when we start the day, we don’t ride off in one hundred different directions, but rather have purpose and direction.
  • Goals motivate. The reason we sort of sleep walk through life is because we have little or next to nothing we are seeking to accomplish with our lives beyond survival. Get alone with God and ask him to show you some goals. What are your dreams and aspirations for your family? Health? etc?
  • Goals can help you establish priorities. If you have no goals or plans your life can be held hostage by people who think they know what you should be doing. Goals can provide a roadmap to take you from where you are to where you want to be. A well-crafted strategy with an accompanying set of goals is how we need to live our lives.

Our goals become the raw material from which we build our schedule. Our priorities should be our goals, and vision. Until we decide what our priorities are, everything will be a priority. You will have to learn how to say ‘no.’ You do not have enough time to do everything that needs to be done. I am not talking about doing bad things, you do not have enough time to do all the good things that could be done. It is impossible. With limited time and resources you must focus on activities that will move you toward your goals. I understand that there will be times when you have to change course. There will be emergencies and situations that you could not see in advance. These are exceptions. You must set goals and plan your day with items and activities that move you in the direction of your goals.

There are many reasons to set goals. Perhaps these four can motivate us into determined action.

TARGET – CONCENTRATE – MOTIVATE – ESTABLISH – Oh that we who are honored to preach the Gospel would be willing to get out of our (local) “Comfort Zones” and get into the (communities) “End Zones” that we might score, score, score for the Savior!
