morning

Early in the morning.  For some these are very sweet words, for others not so much.  One lady told me that in regard to getting up early:”She would just as soon go on to heaven, as to have to get up early.”  Some are by nature ‘night owls’ while the rhythm for others is to arise before the sun.   The purpose of this is not to extol the virtues of arising before the sun.  Rather, my intent is remind, especially myself that each day is a new day.  The Bible and the hymn writer states:

22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed,

for his compassions never fail.

23 They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion;

therefore I will wait for him.”

The newness of the day, not the hour you stop sleeping is what matters.  As soon as you start a new day, remember ‘His compassions never fail!’

Many days end with the feeling of discouragement and failure.  We can become quite discouraged with our present circumstances.  He is a compassionate God, and each day brings new grace, peace and compassion.  Have you failed?  Welcome to the company of the human.  Are you discouraged?  Welcome to the club called ‘children of Adam.’

New, what a word.  It is the promise of new grace, new starts, new discoveries, new possibilities and new opportunities.  New means different, fresh, and today.  Tomorrow is over it ended at midnight!  New means right now, which is good, being that it is all the time that I have.  New means forgetting what lies behind, I press on toward the mark…  New means I don’t have to be enslaved to the past.

I am all about new right now.  After serving the Lord for 30 years as a pastor (with a three year stint at our denominational ministry center) I have entered a new area of ministry, for the past two year I have served as a District Superintendent  I had almost forgotten what ‘new’ felt like.  While extolling all of the positive attributes of new, I must mention some other feelings that attend the new. Feelings such as, apprehension, fear and discomfort.

God allows each new day to stretch us, to remind us of our dependence upon him.

A new day brings new opportunities to trust in Him.

A new day reminds us to thank God for the grace and blessings of yesterday, and move ahead confidently knowing that He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
